I’ve been doing a research into illuminated manuscripts for an illustrated typography commission. I’ve found some images so amazing that I needed to share them here.

アルファベットをイラスト化するという仕事がまいこんできたので、中世の極彩色写本のイメージサーチをしていたら、なんとも素敵な絵の数々を発見してしまいました。

Among all, The British Library’s illuminated manuscript catalogue website has been the award-winner for me. I sometimes think the world before the invention of plastic was far better in terms of the visual aesthetics (I love collecting vintage photographs you see) but I really truly appreciate that we live in the time of digital technology now. Thanks my dearest internet, for sharing these stunning images with me.

オンラインショップ計画、着々と進んでいます、が．．．！

Digital photography’s quite a tricky thing especially when you’re trying to get the colours of the photos as close as to the real objects you’re photographing!

The only comfort is that it’s been rainy for several days here in Melbourne, which makes me feel better about staying in my studio all day gazing into a computer screen with a hot water bottle on my lap! 

ショップに使うデジタル写真、撮影は無事済んだのですが、明るく出過ぎたり黄色くでてしまった色を実物により近い色に持ってく、という作業にここのところ追われています。コンピュータ画面をずーーーーーっと見てるともう目の錯覚で黄色く見えてるんだけなのでは．．．！？ナドナド自分の感覚に対する自信を失いがちに．．．。時間を置いて画面以外に目を慣れさせて再度色見る、という再確認作業の連続です。ここのところ毎日雨だしこういう作業をする日和！と自分に言い聞かせてます（笑）。

Hi, sorry about replying this late! Alphabet series is done entirely by hand. I use Photoshop a lot to come up with the composition and also to work on the typography. But I normally work on the final artwork with pencils in my hand, straight onto a blank sheet of paper. Thanks for your question! 

Ophelia: experimental photography project I did a few years ago has been added to my website!

オフィーリアという実験的写真作品を新しくポートフォリオサイトに加えました。

I was looking through my old external hard drive the other day and stumbled upon the images from this project completely by accident. All the images were created by projecting my illustrations onto a wide range of subjects (flowers, human bodies etc), with minimum use of Photoshop. I think they’re rather nice and I’m now thinking maybe I should do more of these experimental project!

プロジェクターでイラストを花や人体に写し写真を撮る、という手法をとって創った作品達。３年程前に行ったプロジェクトなのですが、昔のHD掃除中に偶然発見！ここのところずっと描いてばかりだったので、新鮮な気持ちにさせてくれました。このラインの作品、もっと創りたくなってしまってます！これはプロジェクター、買うしかない．．．！？

My brand-new online shop project is moving ahead! 新しくオンラインショップをオープンするという企画、少しずつですが形になってきてます！ I’d been thinking about this quietly for a long time, and when I relocated myself to Melbourne I thought to myself, “Well I’ve dwelled on it enough, it sounds exciting and I’m just going to get on with it and see how it goes!”. The products range will be art prints and cards to begin with, and it’ll be possibly expanded gradually to include some chinaware/kitchenware. The new Yuko Mich brand is going to be called Pilcrow & Co. (appropriately named as I’m obsessed with typographical symbols) and I just cannot wait to be able to tell you more about it soon! In the meantime I’m keeping myself busy with photo shoots and setting up the website :) Pilcrow & Co.というショップ名で、私デザインのカード、アートプリント等を取り扱う予定、そして徐々にお皿やマグカップ等アイテムを増やしていけたら．．．と考えています。イラストレーターとしての仕事と平行してのプロジェクト、又初めての試みなので正直どうなることやら！と思う事もありますが、自分の作品を商品化するという全行程にコミットし、自分で納得できる最終形に持っていくという今までとは違った方向からのアプローチ、学ぶ事もたくさん、楽しめる事もたくさん！楽しみにしていてもらえると嬉しいです。

Pick Me Up is opening next week!//Pick Me Upの準備、着々と進んでいるようです！

Pick Me Up kindly took some hanging-in-progress photos of my space, and it’s looking great! The show is opening on the 22nd of this month at Somerset House London. 

It’s certainly going to be a show worth a visit I assure you! 

私も展示で参加する、Pick Me Up というグラフィック、イラストの大規模グループ展がロンドンのサマーセットハウスで今月２２日にオープンします。今回は個人的な事情でロンドンには残念ながら行けなくなりましたが（恥ずかしながらパスポート紛失してしまいまして。旧パスポート無効化、新パスポート更新中です。）これだけの規模、そしていろいろなワークショップの企画もアリ、なんとも楽しそうなイベント。

英在住の方々、または３月下旬ロンドンに行く機会のある方々！ぜひ英デザイン界の今を体験しにいらして下さい。

This illustration is going to be the centre piece for Pick Me Up (the exhibition I’m participating in March in London).

I’m going to make a massive colour phobia confession now! To begin with I had a really bad sense in colouring. I was so bad that for a long time I tentatively created illustration only in black & white and had almost convinced myself that I just simply love b/w visually. I’m over that now (even though I still believe some pieces work better greyscaled!) but this one is the first piece of my illustration to be created with this much highly concentrated and eye catching bright colours. And needless to say, I’m loving it!

This piece is going to be big (65x65cm) and placed in the centre of my exhibition space. It’s still on a work in progress stage and quite a bit more work needs to be done on it but hopefully it will look good when it’s completed. …Well to be honest I think it looks good already but what I mean is hopefully it will look even better than it is now haha :)

昆虫学的万華鏡、という作品を製作中です。実を言うと、イラストをはじめた頃は色恐怖症で黒白の作品ばかり作ってました。今でもモノクロ作品大好きだし、”このイラストには黒白の方が合う！”という場合も多々ありますが、最近は色ものもすんなり受け入れられるようになってきました。そして実際、”好きです、一緒に暮らしましょう！”と思うようなアートワークには色ものの方が多かったりします。

とはいえ、こんなに明るく、目を刺す様な色彩を使うのは初めてで。

ロンドンでのエキシビションにセンターピースとして出展予定のこの作品、今週中には完成させたい！

Port Melbourne//ポート・メルボルンにて I moved to Melbourne from Sunshine Coast about a month ago. It’s been (luckily!) quite busy for me with a few exciting commissions coming through and also with getting artwork ready for the exhibition in London, so to be honest I haven’t seen much of the city yet. １ヶ月ほど前になりますが、サンシャインコーストからメルボルンへお引っ越ししました。仕事やらエキシビション準備やらなにかと忙しく、せっかくの新しい街なのにまだあまり何も見れてない．．！のですが、ビクトリア調の街並も、大きすぎず小さすぎずの丁度いい街のサイズも、なにかと心地よい。ゆっくりとした時間の流れる良い街みたいです。でも３６度はちょっと暑過ぎる〜そこだけはなんとかして欲しいですメルボルン！！
